“Mistakes are the portals of discovery.”James Joyce (In math, a ‘wrong’ answer is just a hint that there is a different path to try!)

Impact

The maths curriculum at Luttons Community Primary Academy is designed to foster a deep and lasting understanding of mathematical concepts, equipping our pupils with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to excel in mathematics and beyond. We aim to develop fluency through the use of efficient and accurate methods for calculation, problem-solving, and reasoning. They will have rapid recall of number facts and times tables to support them in these  foundational skills. As a key part of developing our maths understanding pupils will be encouraged to think critically, explain their thinking clearly, and justify their answers. They will develop the ability to make connections between different mathematical ideas in a range of abstract and real-life contexts. Through applying their knowledge and skills to solve a range of problems, both routine and non-routine they will develop resilience and perseverance in tackling challenging problems. At Luttons Community Primary Academy we believe that through perseverance and resilience, our pupils will develop the mathematical skills they will then be able to use to succeed in all areas of their lives.

Implementation

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to build on prior learning and ensure a smooth progression of skills. Our curriculum is clear and well-structured, with a focus on core concepts and skills. We provide opportunities for pupils to deepen their understanding and apply their knowledge in increasingly complex contexts. We allocate sufficient time for practice and consolidation to ensure secure learning. We embed problem-solving throughout our curriculum, encouraging pupils to apply their knowledge and skills to real-world situations including developing and extending our maths understanding through our Forest School curriculum. We promote mathematical thinking, including reasoning, problem-solving, and critical analysis.

Impact

We know that our children are provided with a mathematical education that is rich in real-life contexts and allows them to apply the knowledge and skills they have learnt.

We know that our children are challenged to use their key arithmetic skills regularly prioritising mental strategies over written methods where possible.

We know our children are provided with regular opportunities to explain their reasoning and mathematical thinking in relation to problems in real-life contexts.

We also use TT Rockstars and Num-bots to further support children’s learning and development.
